City loses suit to former employee   -  1.4 Million dollars

Denise Campbell, former police captain under Chief Ed Peters won 1.4 million dollars from the city in a settlement agreement. We are only now bringing this news to you because it has been kept very quiet as you can imagine. While the current council and city management were not in place at the time of the incident leading to the suit being filed, we should all pay close attention to how the city manager and supervisors treat their employees. The only direct control over this we as citizens of the city have is through our council representatives, and they are charged with overall policy but not day to day oversight and implementation of policy. Dale Brown and the rest of the city supervisory staff are responsible and should be held accountable for their actions or inaction wherever appropriate. The fact that the city had to pay this only adds to our taxes and brings the city no benefit in any way.    ARCHIVED 08-06-98

New water rates in City
The City Council adopted new water rates effective with the next billing after May 1, 1998. The new rate structure reduces the cost of water to those who use less than 15,000 gallons of water a month. Those using 15,000 gallons or more per month will experience a gradual increase in the cost of water. This change is not for additional revenue, but to encourage residents to conserve water and change water use habits.            Archived May 25, 1998

New city councilman to replace Duncan Klussman. William "Rusty" Preece will replace Klussman on May 18th. There were no other filings for office and as Klussman did not run again, Preece will walk in uncontested. Preece has not returned many phone call requests, and very little is known about him. He was involved in the political process in Florida before moving here a little over 2 years ago. He ad a lot of support from homeowners in and around Chichester where he lives.  Klussman said that he spent a couple hours with Preece on the phone and that he felt Preece had the best interests of the city at heart. We will all watch and see.       Archived May 19, 1998
